Google Maps:
There is a FREE utility called "My Maps". It is similar to the Ordnance Survey maps, & many other map apps, which cost a packet annually!! It allows several routes to be plotted on a single map, each with its own colour. It allows markers to be placed enroute: a beer stop, a view point, or the apres. (It could be used to mark check points as well.) (None of the other apps can do any of this.) So it's really good for hashing, where there are multiple trails (long, short & medium), & often stops along the way.
The map is created using a laptop, PC or Chromebook. You need a gmail account - the map data is stored on the internet drive associated with the email address. Open Google Maps, click on Saved, then Maps, & Create a Map. It will automatically open in "My Maps", allowing you to personalise it & add your own detail. It can then be viewed on a smart phone: again open Google maps, & select You & then Maps, and you get a list of all your maps. So, when you are out & about, you can see exactly where you are, and where each of the trails go.
[Mobile Signal Coverage:
IF there is no mobile signal or data coverage: OS can give you a blank white page, & a voice saying "You are off trail!!"; Google maps can get locked into a loop trying to retrieve your map. Solution: take phone snapshots of the route whilst you have a good signal, & then delete them after the trip!]
[Track detail limitations:
Google maps has a very limited number of tracks marked. It is also nigh on impossible to make out a path through the trees, using the satellite overlay! OS refuse to mark permissive paths, & they are very slow to react if a footpath is re-routed. Other apps may show more detail. But only Google is free. (Strava now wants a subscription to view the tracks & the heat maps - unless you know better!)]
Oddly, a single Google map can have 10-12 layers. Each layer is what we would call a hash map - hence the layout of this page, where each linked map has 6-11 layers (hashes).
